Calling all sledders: it’s movie premiere time!

Posted in Life in Revelstoke on November 27th, 2009 by karilyn – 1 Comment

The River City Pub, and The Revelstoke Snowmobile Club have teamed up with THUNDERSTRUCK 8 AND BOOST 4 and are having a movie premiere on Saturday, November 28!
There are some pretty sick snowmobile related prize giveaways, so just bring a non-perishable food donation for the Revelstoke food bank to be entered.

Lots of Thunderstruck was filmed in the area, and Randy Swenson let me know that the crew’s largest first ascents (2500′ vertical) have taken place in Revelstoke with the help of Selkirk Mountain Helicopters.

Movies will start at 7:30. Here’s a teaser:

Handmade Parade this weekend!

The Handmade Parade is happening this upcoming weekend at the Revelstoke Community Centre.

This is the 2nd Annual Handmade Parade - Christmas Arts and Craft Extravaganza put on by Krista Carnegie and the Revelstoke Arts Council! This year we will be seeing more vendors of fantastic quality who will be selling gifts for every price point and interest. The fair will be held at the Community Center from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm on Saturday, November 28 and 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sunday, November 29. An admission of $2 will gain you entrance to the fair, and a ticket to great door prizes that have been donated by many of the vendors at this year’s fair. This year we will see crafters and artists selling everything from fine art to jewelry, pottery, self-published books and many other unique items. In addition, we will yet again host a children’s table where children who have signed up will be able to sell their wares. They are our next generation of crafters and artisans after all! We will be hosting some fantastic live entertainment throughout both days and the fabulous girl guides will be hosting the concession.

RMR opening for sneak peek opening weekend!

Posted in Skiing on November 26th, 2009 by karilyn – Be the first to comment

As you’ve hopefully heard, RMR is opening up this weekend, and then re-opening for good on Friday, December 4. A few other resorts are running specials this weekend, so we might get lucky and have tons of snow and no lines at all.

The Revelation Gondola and the Stoke Chair will be up and running, and the Ripper will be open the following Friday. From what I’ve heard, North Bowl will be partially open, but watch for the boundaries. The snow in North Bowl is unbelievably deep, but if Pro Patrol doesn’t control it please be careful.

There’s a lot of construction going on at the base of the resort, but rest assured the snow up top will make it all worth it. The base is 135 cm at the weather station at 1950 metres - compare that to the 78cm we had on opening day last year!

Get stoked, folks. It’s happening!

Every Day is a Saturday

Have you watched any great ski movies lately? There have been some phenomenal films put out this year. While I thought In Deep and Dynasty missed the mark a bit, I was taken aback by the quality of skiing in Poor Boyz Productions’ Every Day is a Saturday and the stunning filming in Sweetgrass Productions’ Signatures (those films won best film and best cinematography at IF3, not surprisingly!).

The bonus of a good ski movie is that is gives you a new soundtrack to rock out and get super stoked to. I love how certain songs conjure up images of hucking cliffs or floating through waist-deep powder.

Give it up for the Downward Dog

The brand new Taproot Yoga Centre opened with a splash in Revelstoke last weekend, and their flexible schedule means you should be able to get your yoga fix this winter in and around work and playing in the snow. Unfortunately, they don’t yet have an early-morning, pre-skiing or pre-work class, but hopefully that will come in the future to give yoga enthusiasts even more options.

If you’re a yoga skeptic, I encourage you to drop in to Taproot’s Karma Yoga class. Admission is by donation, and all proceeds go to local charities. Karma Yoga is a vinyasa style class open to all levels. While yoga might not be for everyone, I think most people will be pleasantly surprised at the strength and flexibility that regular yoga brings.

Thursday evenings feature a “Yoga for skiers” class from 5:45 to 7:15, and I’m looking forward to checking out how it might help my skiing. Here’s what Taproot says about their Yoga For Skiers class: It wouldn’t be Revelstoke without a class specifically designed to prepare and maintain the body for ski season. Some yoga experience is recommended but not essential.

Do you include yoga as part of your pre-season training, practice it regularly throughout the ski season to stay limber, or use it to relive stress? Tell us about it! What are your favourite poses to stay strong and long for skiing or snowboarding? Let The Stoke know what you think!

Parks Canada Needs Your Help Tonight!

Attend an Open House on the new Park Management Plan for Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Parks and have a say in what will happen in our backyard. The open house takes place today - Tuesday, November 17 between 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm at the Revelstoke Community Centre.

Revelstoke is lucky to be surrounded by Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Parks, and Rogers Pass is only a hop, skip and a jump away.  “Developing a management plan for such special places is an important responsibility…one that Parks Canada invites every Canadian to share in,” says Jim Prentice, Minister of the Environment and Minister Responsible for Parks Canada.

The park management plan review will run until early December, and will then be revised to reflect issues raised by the public while staying consistent with Parks Canada’s policies. The plan will be submitted for approval to the Minister of the Environment in 2010.

You can also review background info on the plan review on Parks Canada’s website.

Get your ski movie stoke on this weekend!

It’s movie premiere season! The 2009 - 2010 season starts off with a bang. This weekend we’ve got two premieres coming up in Revelstoke.

Warren Miller’s
Dynasty will be playing on Friday, November 13 at the Royal Canadian Legion. The film commemorates the 60th anniversary of Warren Miller Productions. The movie is shot in breathtaking HD, and the skiing is pretty fantastic!

Matchstick Productions’ In Deep will be playing at Outabounds Nightclub on Saturday, November 14. Three skiers from the film will be there - local shredder Chris Rubens, Eric Hjorleifson and Mark Abma - and if last year’s premiere was any indication they’ll be dancing up a storm at the afterparty. There will also be a free show in the afternoon for all those underaged rippers in Revelstoke! In Deep’s tribute to Shane McConkey is really touching and shows what an amazing heart he had, and the final scene shows off the camaraderie of the ski community.

There will be some great prizes at both events, including 2 for 1 passes to RMR and a certificate for a free AST 1 course, and enough great skiing to get you stoked for the start of the season!

What’s your favourite ski movie in recent years? What’s your favourite classic?

Check out “Greening the Cube: 100-Mile Housing” November 4 in Revelstoke

Posted in Life in Revelstoke on November 4th, 2009 by simon – 2 Comments

The North Columbia Environmental Society is putting on a fantastic movie tonight at the Revelstoke United Church. The movie is called “Greening the Cube: 100-Mile Housing” and it plays at 7:00 pm. It’s $8 for NCES members, and $10 for non-members.

Here’s what NCES has to say about the movie:

‘Greening The Cube: 100 - Mile Housing’ is a feature length documentary film that follows the efforts of green-builders Pete Matheson and Sean Sands as they strive to imagine and construct homes that are affordable, habitable, ethical, and environmentally responsible - in a word, SUSTAINABLE.

Tracing the contrasting origins of these two unique builders, the diversity of design and near limitless possibilities for experimental housing is explored through their personal histories and the homes they have created. Taking inspiration from the local-food treatise ‘The 100 Mile Diet,’ a concept for ‘100 - mile housing,’ localized solutions for house and home, begins to take shape in the backwoods of Grand Forks, British Columbia, Canada.

With appearances made by author JB MacKinnon (co-author of The 100-Mile Diet), Professor William Rees (Ecological Footprint Analysis), and other proponents of sustainable living, a case for experimental building and whole-systems solutions to the sustainability question is taken from the wilderness out… Combining integrated approaches to food production, meeting energy needs, responsible management of the waste stream, and other considerations pertinent to our homes and lifestyles, the extremes gone to by the featured builders serve as a counterpoint, a challenge to modern western consumerism.

Ultimately, the lifestyle and movement documented poses but one question; what kind of future will you build?
