Revelstoke Mountain Freeriders Starting up this Season!
Posted in Skiing on September 30th, 2009 by karilyn – Be the first to commentAspiring rippers will have the opportunity to learn new skills, build confidence and learn avalanche safety skills over the 2009/2010 season with the Revelstoke Mountain Freeriders club. The brand-new organization was developed by freeride coach and former ski racer Izzy Lynch, a Revelstoke newcomer who is already a big fan of the community. “I wanted to bring the ski club here, because it’s a great place for it,” says Izzy. Check out the website for information on how to register - there will be an open house in October, so stay tuned.
The RMF is open to skiers between the ages of 12 and 18. For $1000, riders get 27 days of coaching, prizes, an RMF t-shirt, and, most notably, they receive their Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 course, an opportunity that separates Revelstoke’s club from others: “Revelstoke Mountain Resort is such an easy access point to the backcountry, so we want to give kids in our community the right skills to make those decisions,” says Izzy.
She laughs that teens tend to have less fear than adults: “Younger kids tend to be rubber balls - they bounce,” she laughs, adding that “they can push themselves and push each other.” Her goal with Revelstoke Mountain Freeriders is to “establish a collective of great freeride skiers in the area,” so she hopes that the program grows year over year. She’s has been a coach with the Rocky Mountain Freeriders in Lake Louise over the past several seasons, and she watched the club grow from seven skiers to ninety.
While Izzy is a big proponent of ski racing, she says that the Freeride club’s coaching will be somewhat less structured: “I want to foster kids’ individual styles and techniques,” she says, “and let them have their own quirks, use their individual strengths.” Freeriders will learn how to tackle chutes, couloirs, trees, steeps, cliffs, pillows and powder. Through freestyle and ski racing techniques, Izzy hopes to create a big group of well-rounded teenage skiers that can handle all sorts of terrain safely and creatively. “Definitely the main focus is fun,” she says, “but there’s an option for competition during the season.”
RMF has also drawn some guest coaches over the season - Eric Hjorleifson and local hero Chris Rubens will be helping the club out, and Izzy thinks that will be a tremendous motivator for the Freeskiers: “they’re really talented skiers that the kids can learn from,” she says, emphasizing that the club will have “a lot of learning from example.” Check out more information on the Revelstoke Mountain Freeriders here.
Izzy also coaches for Girls Day Out, freeriding clinics for women put on around Western Canada. She hopes to bring a Girls Day Out clinic to Revelstoke this winter. Her best advice for adult aspiring freeskiers looking to develop new skills and build some confidence? “Follow your kids around,” she laughs; “and build your confidence slowly by doing things that aren’t too far out of your comfort zone at first, and then moving on to bigger things.”
Keep your eyes peeled for the Rad Boob Charity Calendar which will be on sale near the start of ski season. Izzy is actively involved in the charity organization, whose proceeds go toward fighting breast cancer.
